Oasis Academy Woodview proudly welcomed Preet Kaur Gill, Member of Parliament for Edgbaston recently to join our daily breakfast club for pupils, which is now supported by the Government’s national free breakfast club programme.
We expanded our breakfast club model after Easter, which provides pupils with a nutritious meal at the start of the school day. Alongside choosing from cereal, fruit and toast, the children also can chat or play with their friends, read or get a head start on their learning with their teachers in a safe and nurturing environment. This all supports their readiness to learn, improve attendance and promote a healthy wellbeing. It has now become more accessible to all our families.
During the visit, Preet met with our pupils and staff, spoke with the breakfast club team, and saw first‑hand how the provision is helping families across the community.
Preet observed pupils enjoying a healthy start to the day and seeing first-hand how the provision supports learning and wellbeing. She spoke with pupils and staff about the impact the club is already having on attendance, focus, and family support. She actively joined in with the pupils, taking part in skipping outside and engaging in chess and other games, which was warmly received by the children.
Preet said:
"It was a pleasure to join staff and pupils at Oasis Academy Woodview to see the fantastic free breakfast club up and running. Thanks to Government funding, the breakfast club is giving pupils a healthy start to their day, and it was a real privilege to see the children so engaged as they started their morning. I am proud to be the MP for the Edgbaston community and to see first-hand the benefits of investment in free breakfast clubs. Well done to all staff for their hard-work in setting up the club and providing such an excellent provision for the children.”
Preet also shared a video of her visit across social media channels, which you can watch on Facebook and X.
Principal Joseph Darnley said:
“Our breakfast club is already having a huge impact, with over 60 children welcomed through our doors every morning to start the day nourished, settled, and ready to learn. It has been an invaluable support for families and has strengthened our sense of community by bringing pupils together in a positive, caring environment. I am incredibly grateful to the dedicated staff whose commitment and hard work have truly made this vision a reality for our children.”
The breakfast club at Oasis Academy Woodview is one of more than 500 new clubs being supported nationally by the government’s manifesto commitment to ensure every state funded school with primary-aged pupils in England can offer a free breakfast club open to all students.
