Introducing the Green Giants

Hello! Our names are Sasha and Teearna and we are part of the Green Giants. For six weeks we will be working hard to protect our local environment by meeting officials, picking up litter and learning and discussing problems.

Here are two things we’ve been talking about so far:

Ocean Pollution

Now, ocean pollution is very common on our planet. Over 1 million turtles die because of straws getting in their noses and plastic bags suffocating them when they try to eat them. One time a whale was found with more than 10 plastic bags in their stomachs after death. Pretty sad, right? On just one sandy beach, 12,000 tonnes of plastic were found, increasing the chances of animals dying.

The Littering Problem

Littering is the most common crime. It is everywhere, in playgrounds, schools, outside restaurants and more. Below are the top 10 places to be aware of litter in our local area:

  1. Town. Walk through the Grand Central shopping bit till you see a MacDonalds. We were outraged by what we saw there!
  2. Edgbaston Woodview Drive Community Centre
  3. Nechels Bloomsbury Road
  4. Parks
  5. Ladywood
  6. Handsworth
  7. Leebank Bell Barn Road
  8. Smethwicj
  9. Broadstreet
  10. The big road near our school.

Since there is such a big littering problem, here are some ways you can reduce the amount of waste you create:

  • Bring your own container for shopping or to restaurants
  • Bring your own coffee mug to Starbucks
  • Check recycling in your local area
  • Buy in bulk/big packs/multipacks
  • Buy reusable snack bags
  • Clean with green/use reusable paper bags
  • Try composting
  • Try to buy less toys with lots of plastic bits and plastic packaging.

Thanks for reading and we hope you are more aware now. Have a good day!
